Garden lovers can be so passionate about the outdoor retreats they create that they get lost in daydreams about plants and gardening design themes for most of their waking hours. And for these people, landscaping with boulders can provide a spectacular outlet for their creative instincts. Boulders, by their sheer mass, make magnificent focal points for any garden setting

Have A Plan

Landscaping with boulders demands significant advance planning, however, simply because the boulders are so difficult to move. The boulders should be the first things positioned in a garden and their oppositions should be permanent, with all the other landscaping elements planned around them.

Designing With Levels

Landscaping with boulders will give you the opportunity to add distinct levels to your garden. You’ll have to select the best areas in your garden to develop into levels, and then define each level with groups of from three to seven boulders of different sizes.

Using Boulder Textures and Colors To Create Effects

Boulders of different minerals will add different textures and colors to your garden and you can group them in similar colors for a large area of visual impact. From calming white and ivories to more vibrant yellow and red shades, from soft grays streaked with green lichen and moss to nearly black, there’s a palette of colors which you can mix or match when landscaping with boulders to produce a variety of effects. Color has a strong influence on mood, so you can use boulders to transform different areas of your garden into calming, or energizing places.

If you’d like to add an Oriental look to your garden, landscaping with boulders is a very effective way to achieve one. A single smooth white boulder in a bed of small stones will evoke a peacefully flowing stream.

A strategically positioned series of descending boulders can create visions of a waterfall; if you are lucky enough to have a stream in your garden, you can even create an actual waterfall by landscaping with boulders.

You can get advice on how to position the boulders from the company which supplies them; the experts in landscaping with boulders will even suggest which end of the boulder should be kept exposed for its interest. Their staff will assist you in placing the boulders when they deliver them.

Their fascinating shapes, subtle striking colors and solidity mean that by landscaping with boulders you’ll add an air of permanence to your garden, making of it a place where your gardening dreams are truly “cast in stone”!

Before you start on your first composting project of the year, have you thought about what you were going to place your compost in? I don’t mean, “In my garden,” or even, “In my houseplant’s soil,” those are all moot points. I mean, have you considered whether you were going to compost out in the open for anything and everyone to see, or perhaps in a compost bin or compost tumbler? After all, these are important points to consider and they may hold the key to a successful composting project.

There are quite a few methods when it comes to composting; some use the open composting method by building a pile of compost out in the woods or yard, others use compost tumblers and bins. I prefer the compost tumbler method out of all of them mainly because I lead quite a busy life and can’t commit to watering down my compost constantly if it’s out in the open in addition to turning the pile on a regular basis. However, that’s not to say that a compost tumbler is better than open composting; both methods produce the same amount of compost in the same amount of time so long as you keep your compost heaps aerated.

Moving forward, compost tumblers have a lot of great benefits, the most obvious being that if you’re a busy person all you really have to do is toss all your food scraps and/or yard waste into your tumbler, turn it or flip it (depending on the design) about every few days and you‘re good. Tumblers of course, keep your compost aerated which is very important; you never want your compost to stay stagnant because that would bore the little microbes in your heap. They should be actively eating and decomposing all the matter in the tumbler or bin!

Another reason I prefer tumblers over other methods is that it keeps animals and rodents away from your compost. Your pile will stay securely in the tumbler until it’s ready to be removed, which can be easily done. But the big reason why I like compost tumblers is because they’re fun! Sorry to the folks who have open compost heaps, but I don’t find using a pitch fork to turn my compost appealing at all. Something about spinning or flipping my compost tumbler while on a steady axis sounds easier. Call me lazy or what have you, but know this: my compost heap is still just as good as yours!

Carbon monoxide and fireplaces are a dangerous combination. Carbon monoxide is a type of gas that kills almost 300 people in their homes each year. Carbon monoxide is given off by burning any fuel. Therefore, any fuel-burning appliance in the home is a possible CO source. When appliances are kept in good working form, they produce little CO. Appliances that aren’t operating properly can produce deadly CO concentrations in your home. CO poisoning can also be caused by using charcoal grill inside the house or when a car is left running in the garage. Sources of carbon monoxide include room heaters, furnace, charcoal grill, range, water heater, auto in closed garage, and fireplaces. Precautionary measures must be taken to avoid the deadly duo that’s carbon monoxide and fireplaces that are inadequately maintained.

Fireplace safety tips include the following:

· Fuel-burning furnaces, appliances, or fireplaces should have at least one CO detector that’s ideally situated, such as in a hallway or sleeping area.

· The fireplace damper must be opened before lighting the fire. It should be kept open until the ashes have cooled. The damper must not be closed if the ashes are still warm. The build-up of poisonous gases inside the home can be avoided if the damper is left open. When carbon monoxide

· Gasoline, charcoal lighter or other fuel should not be used to light or relight a fire since the vapors can explode. Flammable materials must never be kept near a fire. And, flammable liquids must never be stored in the home. Charcoal must never be used in a fireplace because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

· A chimney that is blocked or clogged due to leaves or soot can cause combustion byproducts, including CO, to be expelled into the home. Cracked masonry could also cause an obstruction. Regular inspection and cleaning using a chimney sweep can help helps prevent or remove blockages. The chimney could also be fitted with a screen cap to dissuade nest-building.

· A common source of carbon monoxide include wood-burning and gas powered fireplaces. To make sure there is fresh air, the window should be left open a few inches. Treated woods, painted wood, and scrap lumber should not be burned in a wood burning fireplace. Only seasoned firewood must be burned.

· The chimney dampers must also be opened before using fireplaces. Opening it can produce a draft that goes up the chimney. This will provide the fire air to burn efficiently at the same time providing ventilation of smoke and carbon monoxide.

· Gas logs or burners emit a lot of CO since the less-efficient, yellow flames are desired for a cozy atmosphere. Those who own ventless fireplaces must be extra careful since these appliance expel all combustion byproducts into the room. While the fireplace is run, the combustion process is fueled by the oxygen taken from the room. When there is less oxygen, the combustion becomes less efficient, giving off more CO.

· Regular inspection and maintenance of the flue, burner, and chimney should significantly lessen any CO troubles affecting the furnace.

· A qualified technician must be hired to examine chimneys and fuel-burning appliances. This is to ensure that these devices are functioning properly. The technician should also check that there is no blockage that’s preventing the harmful fumes from being vented out of the house.

These are just some measures that people can take to guarantee a safety home. It’s a better alternative to spend a few dollars on proper maintenance of the home than to suffer the consequences of neglect.

Did you know that you can pamper yourself and be environmentally conscious?

I can hear the chorus of “Huh?” from here.

For some reason, most people think that being environmentally conscious requires sacrifice, discomfort, belt-tightening, effort, and time.

Not true!

All right, some environmentally-sound actions do involve a little work, or at least some thought, on your part. For instance, recycling requires you to be conscious of what you’re throwing away and whether or not you can re-use it or recycle it instead.

But there are a host of small luxuries that may surprise you because they’re also environmentally conscious choices. Here’s my top-five list.

Use cloth napkins instead of disposable paper napkins I love the feel of a cotton napkin on my hands and lips. It’s much more comforting and luxurious than the scratch of even the most heavily-processed and refined paper napkin. You can use a cloth napkin for several days or even a week before it needs washing, and the energy required to wash and dry a cloth napkin once a week is far less than what’s required to process, package, deliver, and dispose of paper napkins.Get everyone in your family a fun, unique napkin ring so you can keep track of which napkin is whose, and enjoy this old-world luxury on a daily basis, knowing that you’re saving paper and energy and reducing waste!

Turn off your computer every night How is this a luxury, you ask? Very simply: you’re saving yourself annoying trouble! When you turn off your computer, you force it to really reset itself, as opposed to clicking “restart,” which doesn’t always truly wipe everything clean. It’s the difference between using an eraser on a white board (restart) and actually washing the white board to remove every scrap of ink (shutdown). You’ll experience fewer annoying problems and system glitches, and reduce your electric bill.

Get yourself some nice water bottles It’s hard to believe that just a decade or so ago, the only bottled water most people drank was the fizzy stuff – bubbly mineral water or club soda! For health reasons, we all focus on drinking lots of water – and for aesthetic reasons, many of us shun tap water. But even recycled, those plastic water bottles are a tremendous strain on the environment.

Instead, buy yourself a few nice water bottles. Get fun and silly and go for colors that complement your wardrobe! Then refill them from BIG multi-gallon springwater containers, or filter your tap-water. Those big containers cost less, so you’ll be saving money, too.

Shop local farmers’ markets The quality of fruit and produce you’ll find at farmers’ markets is notably better than even the most upscale supermarket usually carries. And you can treat yourself to wonderful seasonal luxuries that never appear in supermarkets. Some farmers’ markets even carry bread, cheese, seafood, and meat. Yum!

Use a fountain pen (or at least a refillable pen) My formative writing years were spent in England, where (at least when I was there!) schoolkids learned to write with a fountain pen. I’ve never given it up.There’s something very sensual and luxurious about writing with a good pen, whether fountain or otherwise. Treat yourself to a good-quality refillable pen, and rediscover the fun of writing a note by hand. Even writing your shopping list is more fun – and you’re not throwing empty plastic pens away!

“The goal of life is living in agreement with nature.” Zeno of Citium, Hellenistic Stoic philosopher, 333 BC – 264 BC

Although the concept of SEO can be somewhat complex, there are a number of basic search engine optimization practices you should note before starting any SEO related activity. These basic principles are essential for any web page or website for which you are attempting to optimize. Keep in mind that these are just some of the fundamental SEO practices you should consider.

1. MetaTags

Metatags are simple lines of code at the top of your page (source code) that tell the search engines about your page. I recommend that you be sure to include the following meta tags: title (no more than 7 words and unique for each page), keywords, description, author, and robots tag. The robots tag instructs the search engines to read all or some of your website.

2. Create or update your sitemap

Developing a site map is a simple yet highly effective way of giving search engines the information they need to crawl your entire website. This ensures that the engine has an up-to-date record of your pages and content. The key to improving search engine results is making it easy for your website pages to be located and crawled. There is free software on the web (like www.xml-sitemaps.com) that helps you generate a sitemap. Once you create a sitemap for your website, submit to Google and Yahoo. Additionally, place a link to the site map on your home page.

3. Ensure that all navigation is in HTML

Too often I see navigation in the form of java script or images. Even though the navigation technically still works in this format, it’s not optimized. The benefit of creating your navigation in HTML is that you consistently build internal links throughout your website by keeping the navigation constant and easily identified by search engines.

4. Check that all images include ALT text

Your image alt text is spidered by search engines. If you’re not including your keywords in your alt text, your missing out on a huge opportunity for improved search engine result placement. Be sure to label your images appropriately and they may even show up as the number one result on Google. Additionally, Google has a database of images (Google Image Search) that indexes pictures as well.

5. Use Flash content sparingly

As mentioned earlier, content generated through java script or flash is a big no-no. Some webmasters like to use flash because of the presentation. It’s okay to use sparingly, but only after your site has been properly optimized with basic SEO in mind.

6. Make sure that important page elements are HTML

Keep in mind when optimizing a web page crawlers are basically only looking at your source code. Anything you’ve put together using an image or other multimedia component is likely to be invisible to search engines. Therefore, the most important elements of your page, where the heart of your content is presented, should be presented in W3C optimized HTML source code.

7. Place keywords in your page content the right way

I’m sure you’ve heard the importance of placing the right keywords or keyword phrases in your content. To show the search engines that your article is focused on a particular keyword or keyword phrase, be sure to sprinkle it throughout the content. Additionally, include your keyword in headers and sub-heads. That is to say that your keyword should be contained in an h1, h2, or h3 tag.

Learning to optimize your website for search engines takes time and most of all, patience. Start with the basic principles I’ve outline here and you’re off to a good start. If you’re new to SEO, or even a well seasoned veteran, begin by prioritizing which pages are most important for you to optimize. Sometimes people think that they need to optimize all their pages right away and the task becomes too overwhelming. Start small, begin with your primary and/or secondary pages, and go from there.

That perfect recipe, that one great cooking tips, or that informative cooking ebook, they are all as close as your computer. A search online can reveal exactly what you are looking for. There are plenty of food oriented websites and blogs, book sites, and even eBay, where excellent cooking information can be found.

A simple search on Google for the term “cooking” will return more than 134,000,000, while the term “cooking ebook” will returns a mere 1,650,000. As you can see, knowing what you want to look for really helps to narrow down the results and helps to bring more targeted information on the topic you are searching for.

Searching with a search engine can provide instant cooking help, but if you are looking for books, hardcopy or ebooks, a search of online book stores and even eBay is in order. Cooking books can be found on any of the many online book stores, while ebooks (which can also be had instantaneously) can be found by searching eBay.

Having the right knowledge when it comes to cooking can lead to better cooking and improved cooking skills.

There is a fierce competition between different providers of noni juice. Of course there’s the usual boasting that their noni juice is more pure, or better tasting, or more beneficial. But the real competition lies between the locales of noni juice origination. Is Tahitian noni juice better than Hawaiian noni juice? Or is there no difference?

I think you’ll be glad to know that noni juice is noni juice no matter where the noni fruit originates. Noni fruit is grown in tropical climates so Hawaii, Tahiti and the rest of the Polynesian islands are all great places for noni fruit and noni juice. There is a difference between quality and purity of noni juice made by different producers, however.

Hawaiian noni juice is produced from noni fruit trees brought to Hawaii by Hawai’I Loa. It was one of twenty seven species of plants that he thought was vital for their new life in the Hawaiian Islands. The amount of sun and rain on the islands are just perfect for the noni tree. Hawaiian noni juice is made from these noni fruits ripened naturally and in an open natural environment. A lot of noni juice producers even harvest the fruits by hand.

The best Hawaiian noni juice is made from the pulp of the noni fruit, not the bark of the tree, fallen fruit, leaves or seeds. Now I am warning you that pure noni juice smells absolutely horrible and tastes even worse. It is perfectly fine to mix it with fruit juices so that it is actually palatable. You can even buy Hawaiian noni juice already mixed with different fruit juices.
